Ottawa, ON – This morning, on behalf of the Atlantic Liberal Caucus, I sent a letter to the Leader of the Official Opposition and the Leader of the NDP, encouraging them to put an end to the political games we have seen recently at the Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration. The Committee is undertaking an important study on immigration to Atlantic Canada, as requested by the House of Commons in its unanimous support of a motion brought forward by Fundy Royal MP Alaina Lockhart.
Numerous witnesses, invited to provide expert testimony on immigration to Atlantic Canada, were prevented from testifying when opposition party members used time allocated for this study to discuss issues outside of its scope. The witness testimony would speak to the importance of the study, which deeply resonates with Atlantic Canada, as it examines significant issues for our communities, like the challenges associated with an aging and shrinking population base.
All Atlantic MPs remain united in support of this study, and will not stop fighting to improve the lives of our constituents. It is my hope that all parties can agree to respectfully move forward, and continue the important work the Committee is doing on behalf of all Atlantic Canadians.
